It's Mad Hatter Day!

It's Mad Hatter Day!

Did you know that October 6 is Mad Hatter Day? If you don't know why, simply take a look at his hat. Of course, the actual 10/6 on the Hatter’s hat is just a price tag of 10 shillings and sixpence. This fictional character, from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, is typically acting silly, so the creators of this day decided on the theme of silliness. From then on October 6 became National Mad Hatter Day, a day to bring out your silly side!

Brief history of Mad Hatter Day: The Mad Hatter was a problem that arose in the 1800’s when hat companies used lead in their hat making process. The lead got into a persons system and turned them insane, hence the term “mad as a hatter”. Carrol took this event and created the Mad Hatter character. But the holiday itself began in Boulder, Colorado in 1986 by a group of computer geeks as an opportunity to act goofy for a day. Although Mad Hatter Day isn’t a nationally recognized holiday, it doesn’t stop people from celebrating in their own silly way.

Celebrating the day can involve a lot of combinations of activities, dress, and foods. Since the Mad Hatter is depicted having an on-going tea party you can celebrate by having a tea party. Ask people ridiculous riddles like The Hatter’s own, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” Or wear a funny hat to work.
